Anuradhapura is an ancient city in North Central Province, Sri Lanka, renowned as the cradle of Sinhalese civilization and a major center of Theravada Buddhism, with monumental stupas, monasteries, and the historic Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi.
Founded in the 4th century BC, Anuradhapura served as the capital of the first great Sinhalese kingdom for more than a thousand years. Its Sacred City is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with ruins spread across parks, ponds and ancient reservoirs.
The Sri Maha Bodhi, grown from a cutting of the tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment, is among the oldest living trees with a recorded history. Around it rise great stupas such as Ruwanwelisaya, Jetavanaramaya and Thuparamaya, along with monastery complexes such as Abhayagiri.
Today Anuradhapura is a calm, spread-out city where ancient sites sit beside everyday life. Pilgrims in white still bring offerings to the stupas, which is why modest dress and quiet respect are part of every visit. Your guide brings the history to life at every stop.
Choose a Morning Tour (8:00 AM to 1:00 PM) or an Afternoon Tour (2:30 PM to 7:00 PM). Both include a personal guide and private vehicle, at $30 per person. Tourist entrance tickets are not included.
